The American Federation of Musicians is asking major labels to make AI consent, credit, and compensation enforceable parts of the next Sound Recording Labor Agreement.

The union’s demands would let musicians approve or refuse AI training uses, require transparent credit, and provide payment for AI use and label licensing deals. Negotiations with Universal, Sony, Warner, and Hollywood Records are scheduled to resume in November.

This is a labor-contract test with consequences beyond one lawsuit. If the AFM wins specific AI language, musicians could gain a repeatable framework for how catalog licensing reaches the performers whose work made those recordings valuable.
