Source: Reuters — Anthropic and music publishers square off over fair use
Anthropic asked a federal judge to rule that training Claude on millions of song lyrics is fair use, while Universal Music Group, Concord and ABKCO argued that the system can generate competing synthetic lyrics that harm songwriters.
U.S. District Judge Eumi Lee questioned both sides during the October 21 hearing and did not issue a ruling. The publishers cited nearly 120,000 requests for synthetic lyrics over six months; Anthropic countered that the publishers had not identified specific market harm caused by Claude.
Has a court ruled that using song lyrics to train Claude is legal? No. The judge heard arguments but did not decide the fair-use question. The allegations and defenses remain contested.
Why it matters: A ruling could influence how courts evaluate copyrighted lyrics as AI training material and whether output capable of competing with human songwriting changes the fair-use analysis.
