Chase & Status do not see generative AI as an existential threat to musicians. Their response is practical: develop a stronger point of view, deepen the craft and use new technology without surrendering artistic identity.
Speaking around their album Generic Everything, Saul Milton and Will Kennard argued that AI can produce polished material quickly, but it still works by recycling what already exists. That makes conviction and individuality more valuable—not less—as synthetic music becomes easier to generate.
For independent artists, the useful takeaway is clear. AI can accelerate parts of production, but it cannot substitute for taste, lived experience or a recognizable creative voice. The best defense against generic output is music that sounds unmistakably like its maker.
