Source: AI Musicpreneur — Questlove Sees AI and Sampling on Parallel Paths
Questlove sees a historical parallel between generative AI and sampling culture, but says AI companies should disclose their training material and compensate creators.
In a Billboard On the Record interview, he said he is not ready to sample AI-generated music because he hears digital distortion in current output. He also expects the technology’s sound quality to improve.
The comparison matters because sampling eventually developed recognizable clearance and payment systems. Questlove’s position suggests that AI music could follow a similar path if provenance and compensation become practical rather than optional.
His comments do not establish law or policy. They do, however, add a prominent artist’s voice to the industry demand for transparent training data and creator participation in AI music economics.
