The Korea Music Copyright Association will register AI-assisted songs when a human creator made a substantial contribution to the lyrics, composition or arrangement.
Songs created entirely by AI from a simple prompt remain ineligible. Applicants must identify the AI tools they used, describe how those tools participated in the process and certify that their disclosures are accurate.
This reverses KOMCA’s previous policy of withholding registration from AI-assisted works. The policy concerns registration and royalty administration through South Korea’s largest music copyright collective.
Why it matters: The new standard offers a practical model for distinguishing AI assistance from fully automated generation. Musicians should preserve drafts, project files, recordings and editing histories that demonstrate their human creative contribution.
