Spotify Adds Kobalt To Its Licensed AI Covers And Remixes Program

Published: 8/13/2026

Spotify and Kobalt signed a licensing agreement that will allow participating songwriters’ compositions to be used in Spotify’s forthcoming AI-powered covers and remixes feature.

The tool will be sold as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers. Spotify says participating songwriters will receive credit and compensation, while generated creations will direct listeners back to the original songs.

Participation is not automatic for every Kobalt songwriter. The agreement concerns songs from participating writers, and Spotify has not announced the feature’s release date, price or complete royalty structure.

Why it matters: This agreement addresses the composition copyright behind a song—not only the sound recording. Licensed AI remix systems will need permission and payment structures for both recordings and the underlying lyrics and music. Independent songwriters should verify how their publisher handles consent, attribution and royalties before participating.
