Source: Reuters — Supreme Court Rejects Music Labels’ Copyright Challenge
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear music labels’ challenge to a ruling that allowed songwriter Cyril Vetter to reclaim worldwide rights to “Double Shot (Of My Baby’s Love)” through U.S. copyright termination law.
The decision leaves the Fifth Circuit ruling in place. Vetter and Donald Smith transferred their copyrights in 1963; Vetter later invoked a federal provision designed to let creators terminate certain older grants after decades and recover ownership.
The case is not specifically about AI, but it matters to the AI music economy because catalog ownership determines who may authorize licensing, training, remixes and synthetic performances. A company that acquired rights under an old agreement may not control those rights forever.
Why it matters: AI licensing contracts should identify the territory, duration and rights actually controlled by each party. Creators should also understand whether copyright-termination provisions could eventually affect long-term grants.
