Grammy-winning artist Arooj Aftab says musicians should be paid when their recordings train AI systems and again when those systems generate derivative music. She also supports clear labeling of AI-generated recordings.

Aftab amplified campaign messages from the United Musicians and Allied Workers, framing the issue as both transparency and compensation. Her position separates two moments of value: the original use of an artist’s work for training and the later commercial use of what a model learned.

That distinction matters for future AI music licensing. A one-time training fee may not satisfy artists who believe generated outputs continue to draw economic value from their recordings. Labels, distributors and AI platforms should expect growing pressure for disclosure, consent and recurring payment structures.
