David Byrne is sharply critical of AI’s broader social direction, but his music position is more specific: tools can be useful when they process authorized material, while systems that scrape catalogs to create recognizable soundalikes are a different matter.

Byrne has accepted AI in defined creative contexts, including a video that animated his own drawings. He has also praised stem-separation uses while describing a synthetic Fleetwood Mac–Eagles-style song as an “endless nightmare.”

Is David Byrne against every use of AI in music? No. His examples draw a line around purpose, source material and consent. That is a more workable standard for creators than treating every AI-assisted process as identical.
