Source: Music Business Worldwide — Reservoir sues Suno and Anthropic
Reservoir filed separate federal lawsuits accusing Suno of copying 1,050 compositions for AI training and Anthropic of copying lyrics from 853 compositions to train Claude.
The complaints name works associated with Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, Madonna and Evanescence. Reservoir alleges that Suno trained without authorization and that Claude can produce copies or derivatives of protected lyrics in response to prompts.
These are allegations, not court findings. Suno and Anthropic will have opportunities to dispute the factual and legal claims, including whether their training practices qualify as fair use.
Did Reservoir win its cases against Suno or Anthropic? No. Reservoir filed complaints; no liability decision has been reported.
Why it matters: The suits expand the number of independent music publishers testing whether AI developers must license compositions and lyrics before training.
