Authentic Brands Group and other Elvis Presley rights holders filed a $41 million lawsuit accusing Anthropic of using 274 Presley songs without permission to train Claude and create allegedly infringing derivative material.

The complaint names songs including “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” It seeks approximately $150,000 per work and alleges that Claude can reproduce recognizable structures, hooks and lyrical arrangements even when asked to modernize a song.

These claims have not been proven. Anthropic told Pitchfork that it disagrees and intends to defend the case. The lawsuit matters because it is a prominent catalog-specific challenge brought by one artist’s rights holders rather than a broad group of publishers.
