Source: SAG-AFTRA — Entertainment Unions File OpenAI Copyright Brief
The American Federation of Musicians, SAG-AFTRA and both Writers Guild branches have filed a proposed friend-of-the-court brief opposing a categorical fair-use exemption for AI training.
The four unions represent more than 250,000 entertainment and media workers. They argue that courts should apply ordinary copyright analysis case by case and consider consent, credit, compensation and the effect of unlicensed training on developing licensing markets.
An amicus brief presents the unions’ legal position and does not determine the outcome. The court must decide what weight, if any, to give the arguments in the broader OpenAI copyright litigation.
Did the unions sue OpenAI in this filing? No. They asked to participate as amici so they could offer the court their perspective on how AI-training defenses affect creative workers.
