Source: MusicTech — Zeds Dead on Sampling and AI
Electronic duo Zeds Dead says AI tools such as stem separation and voice changing can be useful, while questioning whether instant generative music can carry the historical context and human intention that make sampling meaningful.
Zachary Rapp-Rovan described AI output as an average of similar sounds and argued that traditional sampling can preserve the atmosphere, people and circumstances of a specific recording. Dylan Mamid compared generative AI with “hyper-sampling” but emphasized the value of engaging directly with human culture.
The interview is an artistic viewpoint, not evidence that AI music lacks creativity. Its useful distinction is between focused tools that help musicians manipulate authorized audio and systems that produce a finished result with minimal creative involvement.
Is Zeds Dead against every use of AI in music? No. The duo expressed support for selected production tools while remaining skeptical of instant, end-to-end generation.
